Call for submissions: Performance Philosophy

Open Issue, Vol. 7.1 (Jun 2022)

Edited by Will Daddario, Laura Cull Ó Maoilearca, Eve Katsouraki, Diana Damian Martin & Theron Schmidt

Deadline for initial submission of completed articles: 1 June 2021

Artists, scholars, activists, researchers and creative thinkers of all kinds - the Performance Philosophy journal would love to receive your completed, original, and unpublished work for our next open issue!

Performance Philosophy is a peer-reviewed, open access online journal, member-supported and published independently of for-profit publishers.

The journal publishes work that examines and tests out performance philosophy as a field and method - exploring the relationship between performance and philosophy in all its possible configurations.

(How) Do performances think? (How) Do philosophies perform?

(How) Can performance & philosophy transform one another?

What kinds of performance philosophies are needed now?

Performance Philosophy publishes standard articles but also welcomes experimental formats, artistic research and audio-visual content. Our latest issue, for example, is entirely composed of podcasts.

Please check out past issues of Performance Philosophy before submitting to get a feel for the kind of work we publish:

We are especially interested in submissions that:

  • Re-centre the work of BIPOC and global majority heritage artists and scholars, and other groups most impacted by systemic oppression
  • Foreground performance and philosophy from the global South

Please do not send us:

  • Previously published work
  • Essays that have been written for a different context or journal
  • Pieces that do not engage with performance philosophy as a field

Editors reserve the right to return submissions that are not suitable for Performance Philosophy at the submission stage.

If your submission is accepted for consideration, then your material will be sent out for peer-review. We aim for this to be a supportive process and are careful to select reviewers with expertise in the form of the submission.  We do not charge fees for accessing articles, nor for publishing or processing submissions. Author Guidelines

Performance Philosophy only considers submissions that have not been previously published, and are not under consideration for publication with another journal. A typical article will be 6000-10,000 words including notes, though other formats are welcome in consultation with the editor. For complete author guidelines, please visit:

Completed articles (6000–10,000 words) and/or non-traditional artistic contributions, plus an additional 200-word max biography, should be submitted by 1 June 2021 via the journal’s online submissions platform:

We also publish ReViews, essays or creative responses to works/books/events that the author has already encountered at least once before; and [Margins], non-standard and nonconforming works of performance philosophy in the form of ficto-criticism, forays, experiments, manifestoes, visual essays, scores, audio essays, collective texts and more. We welcome conversations on potential submissions at any point for ReViews and [Margins] - click the links above for more information.
