2017 PERFORMANCE PHILOSOPHY EVENTS
Performance Philosophy School of Athens II was a collaboration between the Performance
Philosophy Network and the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST). It took place
on 23– 24 of September 2017 at EMST and was organised and curated by Dr Stella Dimitrakopoulou

WINNERS OF THE 2016 PERFORMANCE PHILOSOPHY SEED FUNDING
Receiving £500:
1. “Repetition/s: performance / philosophy.”
Organizers: Ben Hjorth, Gregor Moder, Bara Kolenc, Anna Street. Ljubljana, Slovenia. 15-17 September 2016.
- “In the spirit of the emerging field of Performance Philosophy, and in recognition of the crucial importance of the concept of repetition within this wide range of fields, we seek to host a truly polydisciplinary event bringing together scholars and artists alike. […] The event will be staged over 3 days in Ljubljana – an important centre of thought and practice due in part to the city’s eponymous school of Lacanian ideology critique, whose three key members (Dolar, Žižek & Zupančič) will form the backbone of the event’s academic program.”
2. “Pragmatics : Practice : Praxis.”
Organizers: Dr. Erin Brannigan (UNSW Sydney), Dr. Barbara Formis (Univ. Paris 1 Sorbonne, France), Prof. Oliver Feltham (The American University of Paris), and Dr. Theron Schmidt (UNSW Sydney), 13-16 July 2017.
- Pragmatics : Practice : Praxis is a three-day workshop that brings together artists and researchers from Europe and Australia. Its aim is double: first to explore how different forms of practice are deployed and given value in the fields in which we work; second to create space for cross-fertilization and experimentation by sharing, transferring and then implementing researchers’ established methods and tools, thus producing new hybrid models of practice.
3. “Contemporaneities. The Entangled Now of Performance.”
Organizers: Dr. Frederik Le Roy and Dr. Christel Stalpaert. Ghent, Belgium. 5 March 2016.
- “Together with philosophers, performance practitioners and performance theories we want to investigate how what philosophical, temporal and historical notions underpin the ‘contemporaneity’ of contemporary performance and understand how performance negotiates, critiques and transforms these notions? This is event is fundamentally invested in thinking the relation between performance and philosophy, specifically the philosophy of time and history as it pertains to the notion of the contemporary.”
- The speakers that have been invited (and have confirmed) are Rebecca Schneider, Milo Rau, Stefan Bläske, Daniel Blanga-Gubbay, Fabian Barba, Timmy De Laet and Thomas Bellinck.

1. “Kiskadee.”
Organizers: Andre Bagoo, Vahni Capildeo, and Kriston Chen. Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. March/April 2016 (coincides with Mardi Gras).
- “This event will seek to take off from Nietzsche’s idea of the central place of dance as a prism through which to question freedom and its limits in contemporary Trinidad, a country where anti-homosexuality laws and the Board of Censors are perhaps as much in force as the more visible powers emblematized by the creativity of Carnival.”
2. “‘Getting Bread’ – One Day Workshop for Philosophy as Performance.”

- “The idea: The Workshop “Getting Bread” tries to find out if the concept of Philosophy as Performance proves itself in everyday life situations. Thus, the workshop may also be seen as a kind of case study in philosophical investigations respectively artistic research. Following the idea that “doing philosophy” is linked with embodied experiences and affective meanings of our thoughts, the workshop is open to non-philosophers and professional philosophers as well. The participants (maximum 12) should be willing to get up early and ready to face real life situations beyond the stage, which may enable philosophical experiences in an integrated sense”
- Driving questions: “How do we treat bread today? What perceived and palpable significance does it have in everyday life situations? Who would share bread with us? Who would accept our bread if we offer it for free? And who would offer us bread if we were needy.”
