EXTENDED SUBMISSION DATE: TaPRA Theatre, Performance and Philosophy CfP – Catastrophe and Reinvention

Dear P&P Network,

The new deadline to submit an abstract for the hybrid (online and in person) TaPRA 2023 conference is Monday 17 April 2023 at 11.59pm UK time. Here is a reminder of the CfP for the Theatre, Performance and Philosophy Working Group:

Catastrophe and Reinvention

Location: The University of Leeds, 30 August – 1 September

The TaPRA working group in Theatre, Performance and Philosophy invites proposals for presentations for the annual conference at the University of Leeds. Any researcher, at any stage of their career, who engages with theatre, performance and philosophy is welcome to propose their work to the group. The working group extends a warm invitation to researchers who have not joined before to participate for the first time. Colleagues who have presented to the group in the past are invited to return to continue conversations about theatre, performance and philosophy. At the annual conference last year our group engaged in the discussion of the theme of ‘survival’ and the role that theatre, performance and philosophy may play in our understanding of how to unlearn and re-learn how to survive in this world. This year, as a new group of conveners will be taking over the working group, we are interested in departing from themes of past meetings as catalysts for new discussions.

What emerges from catastrophe? A carnival of departures with different perceptions and persuasions – apocalyptic visions, new moves of adaptation, habitual reactivation, end-of-world celebrations, political mutations, radical transformations, magical counter-orientations. Let us attend to the things that gather and leave around the cracks. How can we also rethink catastrophe, not only as external tipping point or climactic event but as an active embodied process? What other directions, tendencies and reorientations are required or in emergence? The working group invites proposals that explore how performance and philosophy can engage with the space shared by catastrophe and reinvention. At stake in these questions is the ambivalent possibility of self-preservation, or dignity, or yet the re-entrenchments of divisive logics of power. As a new world takes shape, how might performance and philosophy generously and generatively meet these disorienting questions?

We invite diverse modes of sharing research, including, but not limited to, short provocations, practice demonstrations, performative presentations, formal papers, etc. Please indicate your preference of format clearly in your proposal, with a specific breakdown of any technical requirements. We will endeavour to accommodate all requests, but please be aware that we are working within finite resources and we may need to suggest alternative formats.
Process for submitting a proposal

Please email abstracts (no more than 300 words in length), and an additional few sentences of biographical information to the Working Group Convenors at [email protected] by 23.59 on 17 April 2023.

Please note: only one proposal may be submitted for a TaPRA event. It is not permitted to submit multiple proposals or submit the same proposal to several Calls for Participation. All presenters must be TaPRA members, i.e., registered for the event; this includes presentations given by Skype or other media broadcast even where the presenter may not physically attend the event venue.

IMPORTANT: Please indicate at the point of submission if you intend to attend the conference in person or online and if you have any specific requirements relating to space or AV technology as part of this submission.

Timescale

Working Group Convenors will inform you whether or not your proposal has been accepted as quickly as possible and by no later than 3 May 2023. Convenors will offer brief summary feedback to all proposals that could not be accommodated. Please note that putting together a full draft schedule for the conference is a complex process, particularly as all sessions will need to be accessible to delegates attending in person and online. Therefore, your patience while this process is ongoing, and prompt responses to acceptances, are much appreciated. Convenors will have completed their draft schedules by the end of May 2023.

For more information and guidance on the conference, the application process and the bursary scheme, please visit our TaPRA website at:

Many thanks,

Jenny, Vânia, Annalaura (co-convenors)
